8: Bike track at West Circle. (note how the track is a logical extention of the thin repaving performed after some pipe-work).
9: Shortcut to and from Warren Hall. One path for uphill, one for downhill.
10, 11: Unnamed field between Wellman and VLSB: The use-path here stretched across the field, creating a line slicing off a large corner. The university tried to stop it by planting a shrub barricade, but students quickly formed a hole through it. Then, a simple fence with a single link-chain was installed, but students would step over or under it. Finally, the displayed fencing was erected, stopping the students and restoring the lawn.
14, 15: Not only feet and bikes leave use-patterns. Skateboarders leave their own history...
12, 13, 16: Use paths to VLSB entrance. Construction forced use away from the stairs (in picture 15) and onto the gradd. 16 (subtle): two paths can be seen, one from the edge of the fencing downhill towards the camera, and the other to the right, where students used to walk before construction began (6 monhs ago).
17: West side of Moffit. Used to be a use-path over grass. Steam-tunnel construction is being performed now, and it appears as though they will pave the path upon completion.
25: Trees beneath Sather Tower: This used to be a visible use path. Over the years the school tried several ways to stop students from usingthe path, including putting up fencing. currently they only put up fencing for a few weeks after planting new grass. Presumably the grass is more resistant to wear, as the path isn't very visible anymore.
29: Faculty Glade. Shortcut use inhibited by the posts and wire located at the top of the glade.
30: South Hall "X". I don't know for certain that this was a use-path originally, but it seems likely, as this isn't a pattern that would be likely to exist in an original design. Archival photos could corroborate...
31, 35, 36: Between Sather Tower and South Hall. This was a student-path, until it was paved over about 6 years ago. 36 shows evidence that this path was created after the adjoining paths. 31: Arial view from the tower.
38: Same as 39, reversed view.
21, 26, 39: Memorial Glade. 27: Arial shot from Sather tower. 39: Library Model. Note that the forking path was not included in the original design. Neither was the Memorial Fountain, but the second path (to the left of where the memorial fountain was placed) was in the original schematic. Also, the right fork of the main path, leading to the fountain, was created by use immediately after opening, and was quickly paved. In the original constuction, planners removed the second path, in favor of the fountain. 21: After completion, the path was formed anyhow, and was later legitimized by framing it and depositing woodchips.
22, 23, 24, 34, 40: West of Evans. 34: View from Sather Tower. Note the bike track (top center) (22: detail ground shot) connecting the path to the road) and the corner-cut path (lower right). This one looks clean from above, but it's completely unpaved, and created by use. 40: Library Model, bike track (top center) and Sather corner-cut (bottom) do not exist here. 23, 24: Ground shot of the corner-cut path. To the right are the remnants of a previous, planned attempt at a path that went unused.
18, 19, 20, 41: Between Moffitt Library and Memorial Glade. 18, 19: Path, seen from Moffitt. 20: Path, seen from the glade. 41: From the Library Model: Path not shown.
42: In front of Wheeler Hall. Construction has closed most of the area in front of the hall, and the remaining path is too narrow to accomodate the rush of students at the turn of the hour, so they overflow onto the tree planter, as seen by the worn stripe.
43-46: Just downhill from Sather bridge, path over Strawberry Creek
