permalinkLiving in Internet Time - Monday, Jan 14 2002, at 10:39 pm (more fury, life stuff, qwer)

Okay, about half my trauma is eased, and about half remains. Ahh, feeling a little better.

Also, I replaced the flat color circles in the timeline with little crystal drops. Better? Worse? Too foofy?

Oh, and I'm not done with enhancements yet. Top of my list is to enable logins so you can be signed in on multiple machines sharing the same 'new to you' cookie, so it's truly 'new to you' instead of 'new to this browser.'

Also, re the Netscape font problem: eew! I think I know what's causing it, though why it should happen now makes no sense, unless Dreamhost changed the server config inexplicably... Anyhow, it should be working and pretty before I go to sleep.

The bad news is that the same problem seems to have brought down QWER. Fixing that may not be so easy.

permalinkMake a shorter link with qwer.org - Monday, Nov 19 2001, at 12:23 am (more ego, feedback loop, qwer)

So I've done a little work on qwer.org to make it more useful.

You can still use qwer as a place to swap text and html easily between computers, but now it's also an ideal tool for making shorter links.

As an example, if you want to share a url with someone over the phone, in an instant messenger away message, an email, or anyplace where a URL with a hundred seemingly random characters would be messy, you can make your own shortcut at qwer.

Say you want to show someone this Calvin and Hobbes book: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0740721356/ref= ase_kevinfox02/107-0203713-9114939 but you're talking to them on the phone, or the url breaks when it wraps in an email. You can go to http://qwer.org/calvin, paste in the long url, hit return, and now http://qwer.org/calvin will redirect you (and your friend) to the Amazon page.

Don't give me too much credit. Though I always planned on qwer acting this way, I took some cues from the folks at makeashorterlink.com. I think the qwre solution works better though, for two reasons: First, 'qwer.org' is shorter (and faster to type) than 'makeashorterlink.com', which is in itself an example of irony. Second, while you can make your own shortcut at 'qwer.org/matrix', the same link at the other site would be 'makeashorterlink.com/?C38242C2'. Which would you rather use? Which URL gives you have a hint of where it leads?

In the coming weeks I'll be putting in more code to deal with recycling links after 7 days or so. I also plan to provide an option for permalinks for registered users ('qwer.org/username/matrix' for example) and to let users decide whether a given qwer link or page should be editable by the public at large, the way 'qwer text pages' work now.

In honor of the new functionality, I've officially dropped the [beta] from qwer's name. Please feel free to use it the next time you need to toss someone a mapquest link over the phone or in email.

Visit qwer now!
(if you want to...)

permalinkWeekend Update! - Friday, Aug 24 2001, at 12:45 pm (more fury, ikea, metacookie, qwer, randompixel, underblog, yahoo)

Well, not actually weekend, as it's just Friday, but I just wanted to toss out some bulletpoints:

  • Stayed working late last night, left at midnight.
  • Gonna get a Poang chair for my office. Good for thinking, and napping... Mmm... Napping...
  • Comments are fixed. Long story, messy, but suffice to say that UNIX is a magical beast, and not all magical beasts are nice, or fully understandable.
  • Comments will be ported to mySQL soon, and will be incorporated into the permalink-version of posts (more like Dave does it.
  • I have finalized an order of priorities for projects, as well as a work schedule (well, and 'around-work' schedule) for getting them done during evenings and commutes. The priorities are:
    1. Metacookie
    2. Blogger Purity Survey
    3. Randompixel
    4. Underblog
    5. qwer.org
    6. more...
  • Working on my self-evaluation for the annual performance review
  • I am sooo telecommuting on Monday. Heck, Yahoo even got an award from the EPA for that stuff.

Okay, lunchtime. Hasta!

permalinkAssorted Tidbits... - Tuesday, Jun 26 2001, at 4:21 pm (more haha, life stuff, photo, qwer)

Some quickie tidbits while I turn qwer into something more interesting and usable (not that it's not nifty, but right now it's 'hey, that was neat' nifty instead of 'Let's see what's new at qwer' nifty).

A reader (I forgot to ask his permission to name him) sent me this link yesterday. I'm not sure which is more disturbing: that this file photo of Bruce Willis looks a lot like me, or that people I don't know (or at least whose names I can't place) send me pictures demonstrating just ho wwell they know what I look like...

I made up a joke a few days ago (granted I've been reading a little too many jokes from Yahooligans! recently, but here goes:

What's big, muddy, and uses lots of swear words?

I dunno, what?

Got my Gameboy Advance yesterday. I also got a 128 meg card for my Elph, so now I can take 220 pictures without downloading. Nifty...

permalinkQwer qwer qwer... - Monday, Jun 25 2001, at 9:13 am (more qwer)

One of those words that, if you repeat it often enough, loses all meaning. Except that it didn't have a meaning to begin with.

Okay, so qwer.org has been live for a full 36 hours now, and I'm alreadey convinced that it will be a success, though I'm just as convinced that it badly needs some more functionality to be truly useful. Here are my thoughts so far in bulleted list form:

  • Qwer isn't supposed to be secure. Someone mentioned that I could be sitting in my room, pouring over database contents, and that's absolutely true. Don't go putting things in qwer that you don't want people to see. "Security through obscurity isn't."
  • I need to implement some measures to prevent the un-fun from going through and deleting everything interesting. To this end I'm toying with a few feature possibilities:
    • Passwords: NO memberships, but when you make/change a qwer page, you can optionally put in a password, which can be used with the features below.
    • Stay of Permenance: For N days (between 1 and 7) after a post is made, it can't be altered except by the password-holder. After that time passes, anyone can make a change, and even apply a new password, resetting the 'stay timer.' This would be a checkbox-able feature that the poster can choose to implement or ignore.
    • Ghost-town timer: After 7 days without anyone looking at a specific qwer page, it can float into the abyss.
  • Searchable qwer pages: When you make/edit a page, you can mark it 'private' which would inhibit it from being included in searches. Otherwise, people could perform searches to find words or phrases throughout the qwer world.
  • Recent qwer pages: A list of recently changed/created qwer pages that haven't been marked private (maybe 'invisible' is a better term?).
  • Visit counters and timers: so you can see the number of visits, and the times since creation, etc.

These are still all in my head, but I think I'll implement them soon, to bring a little order to the anarchy.

Uh-oh. Train's coming up to Great America. I gotta go. Be sure to write if you have any cool ideas/complaints/whatever about qwer. Later!
